Mind Your Business

Focus on your next manager, not your next role (or salary)

Early in your career, it’s tempting to focus on landing your dream role or a big salary. Resist the urge. The single biggest inflection point in your early career stage is who you work for, not what you do. Seek out the managers that have a reputation for being talent developers. Every organization has a cadre of managers (and if yours doesn’t then you need to change jobs now) with the reputation of running good teams and being advocates for their staff. Find a role where you’ll have a chance to work more closely with them. Sign up for special projects that they care about. My professional path is attributable to the good fortunate of finding people who saw my early talent and invested in me. They were liberal with their praise and advocacy and that’s made the difference.
